Pirate maps have long been the a source of intrigue but modern day treasure huntersmore often use advance technology like remote operated vehicles and sonar systems than maps stamped with an X. Neverless, pirate maps have survived to modern day and are equally intriguing as those found in archives… but they have a different purpose. Here are a few modern day pirate maps but remember dead men tell no tales and there is no gold to be found on these maps… well unless your inblackwater.

Shootout Between Pirates on Hijacked Ship Carrying Tanks and Weaons.

Seems like the pirates may be in a little bit over there head with the hijacked ship carrying tanks and other heavy weapons.  The Associated Press tells us:

Disagreements between Somali pirates holding a ship laden with tanks and heavy weapons escalated into a shootout and three pirates are believed dead, a U.S. defense official said Tuesday. The pirates denied the report.

The U.S. destroyer USS Howard and several other American ships have surrounded the Ukrainian cargo ship Faina, which was hijacked Thursday and is now anchored off the lawless coast of Somalia. The pirates have demanded a ransom of $20 million and the U.S. Navy cordon aims to prevent them from taking any of the weapons ashore.

The official in Washington who reported the shootout spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record. He refused to elaborate and said he had no way of confirming the deaths.

But the pirate spokesman insisted the report was not true, that his colleagues were just celebrating the Muslim feast of Eid al-Fitr despite being surrounded by American warships and helicopters.

Perhaps the best weapon for fending off pirates might be the pirates themselves.

US Navy Watches Hijacked Ship Carrying Russian Tanks

AFP: NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — U.S. helicopters on Monday buzzed a hijacked Ukrainian cargo ship carrying 33 Soviet-designed tanks and other weapons that officials fear could end up in the hands of al-Qaida-linked militants in Somalia if the pirates are allowed to escape.

Thursday’s seizure of the MV Faina off Somalia, a failed state seen as a key battleground in the war on terrorism, could bring dangerous effects across the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Aden, one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

Piracy has become a lucrative criminal racket in impoverished Somalia, bringing in millions of dollars in ransom.

The pirates aboard the blue-and-white Ukrainian-operated freighter are demanding $20 million to release the ship, its 21 crew members, one of whom has died of an apparent heart attack, and its cargo of T-72 tanks, rifles and ammunition.

The ship, now anchored off Somalia’s coast near the central town of Hobyo, apparently was destined for Sudan when armed pirates overtook it, likely from a speedboat, and climbed up the side of the ship.

“We maintain a vigilant watch over the ship and we will remain on station while negotiations between the pirates and the shipping company are going on,” Lt. Nathan Christensen, a deputy spokesman for the U.S. Navy’s Bahrain-based 5th Fleet, told The Associated Press.

AFP: One of the European crew on board a Ukrainian cargo ship hijacked by
Somali pirates has died of an illness, his captain said Monday, in a
telephone interview from the vessel.

Viktor Nikolski said the crewman had been suffering from high blood pressure prior to his death.

“We have 21 members of crew on board, one of them dead. He’s been put in the cold locker. He was sick,” he said.

The
pirates had announced the death of one of the sailors on Sunday —
without saying which nationality he was. Among the hostages are 17
Ukrainians, three Russians and one Lithuanian.

The MV Faina was
boarded on Thursday by Somali pirates as it sailed towards Kenya with a
shipment of tanks, grenade launchers and ammunition.
